Named after the feared assassination and sabotage unit of the KGB by the same name, Department Thirteen (ISBN: 978-1-936695-42-3) is a gripping tale of ex-KGB informant, Aleksandr Talanov, and his attempts to move on with his life after the Soviet empire crumbles. Now living in Australia, Talanov and dozens of dinner guests are suddenly the target of assassins. Talanov and his wife escape, but soon find themselves running for their lives: hunted by the killers, blamed by the police, increasingly pivotal to an invisible network of death about which they know nothing.

What takes this book beyond your typical spy-thriller is Turner’s experience as a courier and smuggler behind the old Iron Curtain. His firsthand experience lends credence to the story. Important details and authentic nuances abound, leaving readers unveiled to a longtime-secret world.

This prestigious invitation-only event will include media, as well as many prominent Australian-Americans in the community. The gallery features Aboriginal Australian art, which makes it an ideal place for Mr. Turner, a resident of Australia, to begin his tour. Turner once lived in Houston and studied at the University of Houston - Clear Lake.

Thirty minutes before the event, Mr. Turner will make himself available to the media for interviews.

The following day, a public launch will take place at University of Houston-Clear Lake, when the book officially becomes available in the United States.

Department Thirteen is a fast-moving thriller about ex-KGB informant Aleksandr Talanov and his attempts to move on with life after his work with the KGB. Now living in Australia, Talanov and dozens of dinner guests are suddenly the target of assassins. Talanov and his wife escape, but soon find themselves running for their lives, hunted by the killers, blamed by the police, increasingly pivotal to an invisible network of death about which they know nothing.

The book has been met with critical acclaim and much fanfare. Mr. Turner has received praise and support from the likes of 24 master villain, Adoni Maropis, NCIS: Los Angeles star, LL Cool J, Avatar star, Sam Worthington, the Dallas Morning News, Who magazine, and 2-time Emmy Award nominee, Glenda Shaw.

What really adds intrigue and takes this book beyond your typical spy-thriller is the author himself. As a former smuggler and courier in the days of the Iron Curtain, Turner has firsthand experiences that lend credence to the story. Important details and authentic nuances abound, leaving readers unveiled to a longtime-secret world. Says Turner, “Although Department Thirteen is a work of fiction, Talanov himself is based on an actual KGB informant who leaked word out of Moscow that I was on a KGB watchlist and being followed in San Diego, where I was living at the time. That informant is what gave me the idea of a good-guy KGB agent who helped America during the Cold War, and my „Talanov Thriller Series‟ is a dedication to him and the incredible work that he did for me and countless others. When people follow Talanov‟s exploits in my books, they can know the man behind the man really does exist.”

Throughout the book tour, Mr. Turner will also be holding motivational speaking engagements for what he calls his "Too Ugly Tour" into schools and other organizations, where he discusses his triumph over cancer and his newfound success as an author when so many others wrote him off in life.

Sponsors of the tour include Qantas Airways, King Island Dairy, Jacob's Creek wine, Chopin Vodka, and the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

James Houston Turner holds a Bachelor‟s Degree from Baker University and a Master‟s Degree from the University of Houston - Clear Lake. Originally from Kansas, he has worked as a journalist in Los Angeles, and currently divides his time between Australia and California.
Turner also wrote The Identity Factor, which has its roots at the University of Houston - Clear Lake, where he stumbled on the unique literary construction of the biblical book of Genesis, which forms the backbone of his modern-day thriller in the form of an ancient Egyptian tablet that has explosive implications for the Middle East today. The book met with critical acclaim upon its release in Australia, where is scooped finalist awards in four US book competitions, including the National Best Books Awards and the Eric Hoffer Award . It has been released internationally as an e-book, has been adapted for film, and its physical release in the United States is set for this autumn in conjunction with his US tour.

True Mississippi Story Gets National Recognition -

New Orleans, LA  (June 28, 2011) –Comfort Publishing announces that The Time of Eddie Noel (ISBN: 978-1-935361-0-46),  by Al Povall, has received an Honorable Mention at the Foreword Reviews Book of the year Awards, held  at the American Library Association Conference inNew Orleans last week. This is the latest in a string of critical acclaims for the telling of this popular true story from Mississippi’s history.

“Eddie Noel” is a story of murder and racial segregation in 1950’s Mississippi is gaining big reviews and accolades from book experts all over the country. written by Mr. Al Povall, is a true story that many Mississippians are familiar with.

The book tells the story of a young black man named Eddie Noel who shot and killed a white honky-tonk operator named Willie Ramon Dickard.  The killing took place in southwest Mississippi, a place drenched with violence and soaked with moonshine whiskey, where a black man could be killed just for looking at a white man “wrong.”  Dickard’s killing by Noel led to formation of perhaps the largest posse in Mississippi history, its members fueled by hatred, outrage, and in some cases, white lightning.  Noel took on elements of the posse in two gunfights, killing two more white men and wounding three others.  Then he disappeared into the woods of southwest Holmes County, as one reporter said, “Like a whippoorwill.”

Noel was never caught, never tried, never convicted, and never went to prison.  And though he confessed to the three killings, he avoided both a lynching and a date with “Old Sparky,” Mississippi’s venerable, and grisly, electric chair.   In the end, he spent the last 22 years of his life living peacefully in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Reviewers like Regis Schilken, who reviews books for Blogcrtics.com and The Midwest Book Review, couldn’t get enough of “Eddie Noel”.  “By now, I have written reviews for over one hundred books,” Schilken wrote.  “I would highly recommend The Time of Eddie Noel as one of the top five books I’ve reviewed to this date.”
Curtis Wilkie, author of Dixie and Arkansas Mischief, as well as longtime Boston Globe reporter said, “In The Time of Eddie Noel,Allie Povall captures the passions and conflicts of Mississippi in the 1950’s.  This is a fascinating tale of a racially-charged murder spree, a manhunt, and the emergence of Hazel Brannon Smith as a brazen editor of a small-town newspaper who challenged local authorities and went on to win a Pulitzer Prize.”

Sam Haskell, author of Promises I Made My Mother and former Worldwide Head of Television for the William Morris Agency stated “Allie Povall transports us back in time through a series of long-forgotten incidents with absolute clarity and understanding.  He reminds us of what is most important:  truth and character.”

A native of Lexington, Mississippi, Al Povall grew up there during the racially-charged 1950’s.  After graduation from Ole Miss, Povall served as a Naval Officer during the Vietnam conflict and then earned a law degree form Ole Miss and an LL.M. form the Yale Law School.  He practiced law in Jackson, Mississippi; St. Louis, Birmingham, Alabama; Washington, DC and Charlotte, NC before his retirement.  Povall is the father of three grown children and, with his wife Janet and their two cats, lives in Oxford, Mississippi.

215 Book of the Year Award winners, including The Time of Eddie Noel, in 60 categories were honored. These books, representing the best independently published books from 2010 were selected by a panel of librarian and bookseller judges. For more information on this or other titles from Comfort Publishing, please visit www.comfortpublishing.com.

Australian Author Receives Powerful Endorsement from Jerusalem -

May 11, 2011 – Esteemed internationally as a man of peace, Jerusalem’s Rabbi David Rosen praised Adelaide novelist James Houston Turner for the way he balanced religious and political sensitivities with unrelenting suspense in his latest thriller, The Identity Factor (Comfort Publishing).  Rabbi Rosen is an International President of the World Council of Religions for Peace; an Honorary President of the International Council of Christians and Jews; has served as a member of the Advisory Committee of the World Congress of Imams and Rabbis of the World Economic Forum's C-100 (a council of 100 leaders formed for the purpose of improving relations and cooperation between the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds); was made a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to interfaith relations in the Middle East and between Israel and the U.K.; and serves on the Executive of the World Council of Religious Leaders. In a personal letter to the author, Rabbi Rosen said, “Dear James. I enjoy a good thriller when I get the opportunity. Your entertaining book has a hopeful, reconciliatory subtext and I applaud your spirit. I am sure you have considered it, but I think it would make a very good movie.”

“I knew I was walking a tightrope when I wrote The Identity Factor,” says Turner of his novel, which not only addresses current Arab/Israeli tensions in the Middle East, but challenges the traditional view about the origin of Genesis. “Normally credited to Moses, Genesis is actually a collection of more ancient documents,” he goes on to explain. “By comparing Genesis to other ancient Near Eastern documents such as ‘The Code of Hammurabi’ and ‘Epic of Gilgamesh,’ Genesis divides itself naturally into separate historical documents, with the author of each document identified in its colophon, which is a specific type of internal literary phrase.”

And this is where Turner's research provides the basis for an explosive thriller that is already being compared to Jason Bourne and The DaVinci Code (Blogcritics Magazine, Apex Reviews, LA’s the Place magazine). Even the notorious Abu Fayed, played to perfection by the accomplished actor, Adoni Maropis, in the hit television series, 24, lauded Turner's book: "I love a great villain. Great villains demand great heroes and The Identity Factor has both."

"Adoni was right," says Turner from his home in South Australia. "The villain defines the hero, and because the villain in my book is Middle Eastern, I paid special attention not to make him a fanatical stereotype responding to a hackneyed stereotype of the current political and religious climate. And yet I can't ignore those realities. They need to be addressed, yet in a way that is fresh and not contentious. Rabbi Rosen’s endorsement is confirmation that I’ve succeeded, at least to a degree. My novel postulates how a terrorist like bin Laden could escape the clutches of the US military time and again. It raises the bar of possibilities from fiction to fact in light of repeated claims that he actually had help in Washington."

The Identity Factor opens with the discovery of the tablet by British archaeologist Sir Edmund Clayton in the Sinai Peninsula in 1919. Clayton is then murdered and the tablet disappears, only to resurface in modern-day Cairo, where the CIA learns the phantom terrorist, Abu Nazer, plans to steal it. Because the tablet could detonate war between the Arabs and Jews over the ownership of Palestine, the CIA is understandably keen to identify and stop Abu Nazer. But no one knows where he is, much less who he is. A headstrong rookie profiler is hot on Abu Nazer’s trail, but soon discovers her worst enemy may actually be herself. The Advertiser's Samela Harris (News Ltd) calls The Identity Factor, "One of those searing, cliffhanger books that simply defy you to put the thing down."

Comfort publishing Announces Upcoming Release; National Tour from James Houston Turner -

Concord, NC – (May 4, 2011) Comfort Publishing, an award-winning publisher based in North Carolina, is proud to announce the upcoming release of “Department 13” from accalaimed author, James Houston Turner. A national tour is set to launch September 15 at the University of Houston - Clear Lake and include stops in major markets all over the country, including New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

Based on the actual assassination and sabotage unit of the old KGB of the same name, Department Thirteen chronicles a week in the life of retired KGB informant, Aleksandr Talanov, who is happily married to a woman he does not love. But when a group of assassins from his past narrowly miss killing him and his wife, Talanov discovers he has broken the first rule of survival by unwittingly falling in love with the woman he must now fall out of love with if he is to save her.

Says Comfort Publishing's President, Pam Tolen: "What I like most about this book is the twisting, turning, completely unpredictable storyline. No wonder The Dallas Morning News called it "Ludlumesque," after the great novelist, Robert Ludlum
. Turner’s novel is extremely timely in light of the Russian spies caught operating in the United States.  The time is ripe for a hero like Talanov, who helped the West during the Cold War, and whose experience in KGB sabotage and spy tactics makes him a valuable asset. Jim has a series of Talanov thrillers planned, and this one definitely has film potential."

Another book in the Talanov universe, “The Identity Factor”, has just been released on Kindle.

Tour dates and details will be announced later this summer. For more information on James Houston Turner and his upcoming releases, please visit www.jameshoustonturner.com.

Comfort Publishing Set to Make Splash at BEA; Receive Awards; Host Celebs -

Charlotte, NC(May 7, 2010) - Comfort Publishing, LLC, a young, independent press, is gearing up to make quite an impression at the Book ExpoAmerica, taking place in New York City later this month.  Three major celebrities will be in attendance to help promote one of Comfort’s books and two other titles will be receiving awards.

Pro-wrestler, Ric Flair, former Olympian Dan Jansen and Former Dallas Cowboy Ed “too Tall” Jones will all be making an appearance to sign autographs in a special, ticketed event at the BEA on Wed., May 26 at 3:30, to help promote How Athletes Roll (ISBN: 978-1-935361-58-9).  Authored by Barbara Terry with Don Eminizer, How Athletes Roll is a book all about 40 celebrity athletes and their cars, with vivid full-color pictures that grab the eyes and heart-warming interviews that tug at the heartstrings.  Flair, Jansen and Jones are all featured in the book. Ticket holders to the signing will receive a commemorative, eco-friendly How Athletes Roll tote bag, as well as a special advance copy of the book which Ms. Terry and the athletes will sign.

In addition, Comfort will be a proud recipient of its second consecutive IPPY award.  This year’s honor is being given for Fixing Forever Broken (ISBN: 978-1-935361-17-6), by Tamara Lyon.    In the book, Abby Stafford, a rookie writer for an architectural magazine, believes she has everything she’s ever wanted.  When she stops by her parents’ home to tell them of her engagement, she makes a grisly discovery.  Her father, Erik Stafford, an esteemed and prominent lawyer, is hanging in the attic.  His mysterious suicide and her mother’s unexplained absence catapults Abby’s life into chaos.  As Abby struggles to make sense of the baffling circumstances surrounding her father’s death,  all of her personal relationships threaten to crumble after she learns the truth behind her father’s suicide and discovers that she’s been betrayed by those she loves most.

Finally, ForeWord Magazine has listed former New York City Rockette, Diane Sheehan’s book, Zen and the Art of Being Slim, Rich and Adored (ISBN: 978-0-9821154-9-7) as a finalist for “Book of the Year” in the humor category.  “Zen” is not a book about diets, financial strategies or advice on how to win friends and influence people. Nor does it spout formulas on positive thinking, visualization or repetitive affirmations. These eleven short stories impart the ineffable, indefinable, unthinkable Zen experience through the use of satire, rather than metaphor. Metaphor is pleasurable for it unites. It compels readers to dig deeper. Conversely, satire is disruptive, tearing apart familiar patterns, jolting readers from habitual thought processes, propelling them to a higher level, initiating inner change. Its humor and irreverence is not an indication of ridicule or cynical indifference, rather an affirmation of life. The stories are warm spirited, offering wisdom within whimsy.  Readers have the opportunity to laugh at themselves in the life process, a major leap in clearing away the excess baggage that inhibits human potential.

“Having just celebrated our second year of publishing books, I can’t tell you how excited we are to be enjoying this kind of success and receiving these accolades,” said co-owner, Jason Huddle.  “As far as the awards go, there are so many great books out there, it’s an honor to have a few that are considered among the year’s best!  We also can’t wait to release How Athletes Roll, which is already garnering national media attention!  Our profound thanks go out Barbara Terry, Ric Flair, Dan Jansen and Ed “Too Tall” Jones for coming out on our behalf to help promote this great book!”

How Athletes Roll will be in stores on August 2 and is currently available for per-order on Amazon.com.  The IPPY awards will be presented in New York City on May 25 and Foreword Magazine will announce its award winners the following day.  For more information about Comfort Publishing, please visit www.comfortpublishing.com.

These eleven short stories impart the ineffable, indefinable, unthinkable Zen experience through the use of satire rather than metaphor. Metaphor is pleasurable for it unites. It compels readers to dig deeper. Conversely, satire is disruptive, tearing apart familiar patterns, jolting readers form habitual thought processes, propelling them to a higher level, initiating inner change. Its humor and irreverence is not an indication of ridicule or cynical indifference, rather an affirmation of life. The stories are warm spirited, offering wisdom within whimsy Readers have the opportunity to laugh at themselves in the life process, a major leap in clearing away the excess baggage that inhibits human potential.

Ms. Sheehan earned a Masters degree in philosophy at Brock University, majoring in Eastern thought and existentialism.  She was accepted in the Ph.D. program of Religious Studies at McMaster University where she taught death and dying to medical students.  “I then decided to skip death and dying to focus on life and living,” she said.  Now, Ms. Sheehan is a certified hypnotherapist, which might seem a bizarre outcome for one who kicked off a professional dance career as a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall in New York City at age 17.

Blogcritics Review of "Skating Forward" -

All of these courageous young women you will meet in Skating Forward. There are many books on the market about persons who must deal with staggering life problems. But this book is unique because ALL of the women described are skating heroines who face situations which could easily crush most of us.

For sure, this is not a woman’s book; nor is it just a series of memoirs about ice skating. Skating Forward will leave all readers — female and male — in awe because it is one single tale of the stubbornness and flexibility of the human spirit. It will help people who are seeking a beam of light at the end of what could be a darkened tunnel of deep despair.

Author Joanne Vassallo Jamrosz’s book would be a fascinating read for high school and college students to study and discuss — particularly youth who feel life has treated them unjustly. The women in Skating Forward amend their lives and their spirits against all odds. You will not forget them

Examiner.com Review Round Up: The Chimera Seed Featured -

Michelle Kerns, Book reviewer for The Examiner had this to say about Matthew Tully's The Chimera Seed:

Title: The Chimera Seed

Author: Matthew Tully

Genre: Science-y suspense thriller

Remember Michael Crichton's The Terminal Man? A bit of mind-bending science mixed with some seriously intense scenes of blood and guts and horror? It worked like a charm for Mr. Crichton and it works for Mr. Tully's The Chimera Seed.

Michael Tiernan, the bourbon-swigging CEO of Oisín  Pharmceuticals, discovers after his father's death that Tiernan the Elder had stumbled onto an amazing little find while researching resveratrol, the compound in grapes thought to have strong anti-oxidant properties -- a purplish concoction named Dionysinol that doesn't only stop aging, it reverses it. And is a powerful aphrodisiac. Talk about a Viagra effect.

Tiernan the Younger wants to sell Dionysinol and make a gazillion dollars. Tiernan the Elder's former partner, Ivan Falters, wants to destroy it. And everyone else involved in the fracas wants to either drink it, steal it, or use it for their own devious ends.

Ladies, if you've never read a science-y suspense thriller, this is the place to start. Two of the characters, Lori Adams and Mary McKenna, are the most interesting gals I've seen in popular fiction for a while. They are intelligent and polite and pretty and gracious and will smile while sewing your mouth shut. Or torching a gentleman's junk off. Or cutting their own legs to fake a miscarriage on the spur of the moment. Whoa.

What to drink while reading The Chimera Seed: While bourbon is the most consumed drink in the book, with grappa and rye each making guest appearances, this is a tome that cries out for a kicky red wine. If you want to go all authentic, spring for something like a Cannonau di Sardegna directly from Sardinia, an island that plays a big role in the book. But cheap plonk works just fine too. Even the kind that comes out of a box. I should know.

Verdict? Mr. Tully's writing puts me in mind of Michael Crichton: a little, but not too much, science, memorable characters, and a plot that trots along at a nice pace. An excellent addition to the freaky science novel genre. And did I mention there will be a sequel?
